Hutton, Mans finish 1-2 again at Woahink

Siuslaw Vikings senior Celie Mans ran her final Woahink Lake Invitational on Saturday, finishing second in 19:26.4.

Siuslaw Vikings senior Celie Mans wasn't about to let another second-place finish to Bandon's Sailor Hutton get her down.

Hutton and Mans finished 1-2 for the third year in a row Saturday at the Woahink Lake Invitational at Honeyman State Park.

"There will be more opportunities," Mans said. "I'll have more chances."

Hutton finished the 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, .2 seconds, Mans in 19:26.4. Katy Burkhartmeyer of West Linn was third in 19:52.0.

"People like to win, so I'd hope Celie's a little bit unhappy," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said. "She had her heart set on trying to win here her senior year."

But there will be another day, another race, and it will be soon — Saturday in Philomath. Mans and Hutton are entered in the Paul Mariman Invitational, a race Mans has won three years running.

Mans already is putting Woahink in the rearview mirror.

"This race is never very fast, and I don't always do my best here," Mans said of Woahink. "But it's OK. It's just part of the season."

It's also part of a career that saw Mans win the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A cross country individual title in 2015. Siuslaw also won the team title.

"From what I've seen, Celie is more businesslike this year," Johnson said. "She's more confident in every way. Like in class.

"She's grown up, and it's been fun to watch."

Johnson now has a new generation of runners to watch, including sophomore Kaeli Ramos and freshmen Anne Wartnik, Hannah Rannow, Chloe Madden and Bryn Clement.

Ramos logged the second-best time for the Vikings of 22:40.2, a season best, while Wartnik was third on the team with a personal-record 22:47.4.

Senior Destinie Tatum, the Class 4A 800-meter champion, was fourth in 23:34.1, Rannow fifth in 23:47.2, Madden sixth in 23:47.9 and Clement seventh with a personal-record 24:33.9.

Johnson is ready to set them loose.

"We've done enough anaerobic work that the next couple of weeks we'll start getting close to our potential," he said. "We always hope to close the last couple weeks getting a lot better.

"We'll run our fastest times at the end, for sure."

For Mans, it sets up for a great finish to her career.

After Mariman, there is the George Fox Classic, where she ran a season-best 18:30.7 in 2015. Mans regards that as her own personal record, as well.

Then there is a fun run, the Vikings' annual Run for the Brownies at Sandpines, followed by the Far West League championships and the state championships.

Mans is defending champion in district as well as state.

"Celie is just one of those kids you're blessed to have in your program," Johnson said. "She does everything right. She cares. She's one of those kids, you tell her once, it's in the bank, and she'll do it forever and ever.

"I don't like to publish my list of favorites, but if I publish my list of favorites, Celie's name would be up there near the top."

Second to none.
