Vikings boys, girls open season Sunday

Junior Abby Coday leads a veteran girls team as the Vikings bowlers prepare for their season opener Nov. 6

The Siuslaw Vikings' boys and girls bowling teams both qualified for state last season, and they both hope to do that and better when this season begins Sunday, Nov. 6.

The boys were 15th of 16 teams at state, the girls 14th of 16.

"Our boys are defending district champions, so we'll be the hunted," Vikings bowling coach Dusty Anderson said.

Anderson is the manager of Florence's Holiday Bowl, the home lanes for Siuslaw.

"We have all the boys back except one, and we already have someone to take his place," he said.

At state, Patrick Hill was 25th, Neil DeVera 26th, Evan Johnson 46th, Logan Lindner 62nd, Aaron Fleetwood 63rd and Chandler Call 76th.

For the girls, Abby Coday was 8th at state, Dixie Dyess 51st, Maxine Jones 54th, Summer Large 66th, Hanna Anderson 76th, Sequoya Bernard 89th and Taryn Larson 91st.

"The girls will be better. They took third in district last year, and went to state," Anderson said. "They ought to do that or better."

Coday and Jones are both bullish on the girls' chances.

"We have very high hopes, VERY high hopes," Jones said of the Vikings' girls. "Top five at state, as a team."

Coday concurs.

"The team we have now, the people we have back, we can definitely meet that goal," she said.

With juniors dominating both the boys and girls rosters, Anderson sees at least two good seasons ahead.

"All are bowling nuts," he said of the girls team, which he coaches. His sister-in-law Kathy Anderson coaches the boys.

"Abby's the best, and Maxine is getting better. They're all getting better."

The season begins Sunday, Nov. 6, at Emerald Lanes in Eugene.

If all goes as hoped, the teams will roll at the state championships Feb. 24-26 in Portland.
