Thursday, it's all for fun -- and brownies :-)

The Vikings took an early-season spin around the track at Hans Petersen Field.

The Siuslaw Vikings cross country season has come down to a fun run, a district championship race and the state championships.

Thursday, the Vikings host their annual The Run for The Brownies, a 3,000-meter tuneup for the district and state meets ahead.

The race will be held at Sandpines Golf Links in Florence, featuring middle school and high school runners, with the boys running with the girls.

The middle-school race starts at 4:30 p.m., the high-school race at 5 p.m. The course will be available for a walk-through at 3:30 p.m.

Vikings senior Celie Mans has been the top-finishing varsity girl each of the past three seasons. Mans was seventh overall in 2015 in a field of 56 runners, beating 23 girls and 26 boys.

Former Viking Murray Bingham won the race last year as a freshman in 9 minutes, 53.4 seconds. Junior Isaac Griffes was the second Viking and third overall in 10:14.6 as a sophomore.

The course starts and finishes on hole No. 3.

Teams are comprised of runners taken from all the schools. Each team must come up with a team name, with the winning team taking the plate of brownies to share.

Other schools sending runners include Coquille, Glide, Mapleton, Myrtle Point, Pacific and Reedsport.

The Far West League championships follow, Thursday, Oct. 27, at Tugman State Park.

The Oregon School Activities Association state championships are Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Mans and the Vikings girls are defending state champions.
