Opportunity knocks, and Foglio answers

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Freshman defensive end Dayson Foglio

You can find Siuslaw Vikings freshman Dayson Foglio's name on the varsity football roster, but you can't find his right number, or his weight or height.

In games, you often can find the young defensive end on a loose ball, like he was Friday in a Far West League game at South Umpqua.

"I think I've recovered a fumble in every game but North Bend," Foglio said.

There is no official number yet, but if he has six, Foglio would tie the Siuslaw single-season record now held by Don Thompson (1974). Five Vikings had five fumble recoveries in a season, the most recent Jorge Loza in 2009.

Also tied at five are Jeff Young (1981), Kyle Robinson (1997), Jake Wells (also 1997) and Daniel Dormer (2000).

Friday, Foglio suspected a pass when he rushed the Lancers' quarterback early in the fourth quarter.

"They decided to make it a run, the quarterback tossed it, it hit the running back's hands and bounced over his helmet," Foglio said.

"When it was in the air, I went 100 percent and got it."

It was not a game-changer, coming with the Vikings already down, 40-0. (The Vikings lost, 40-6. They play Brookings-Harbor at home Friday on homecoming-senior recognition night.)

But it did set up Siuslaw's lone touchdown drive, eight plays over 60 yards. Backup quarterback Trent Reavis picked up 44 yards of that on three rushes, including a keeper up the middle from the 5 to score with 8:10 left in the game.

The Vikings ran for the conversion, instead of attempting a point-after kick. Foglio has been the team's placekicker in recent games, handling kickoffs and extra points.

"My dad was a kicker, and in PE I was a kicker," Foglio said. "I hope to kick (for the Vikings) for four years."

Foglio is late to the game, having played just this season and last. He may have been one of the few who were happy that the Vikings did not field a junior varsity team this year.

"I'm glad they actually put me on varsity," he said. "(Senior lineman) Robert Fleming has helped me out a lot, with my stance and stuff."

At nearly 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Foglio has not shied from contact, relishing his role at defensive end.

"I love making tackles, and outside contain," he said. "I hope to play some offensive tackle next year. That will be good."
