Siuslaw faces playoff for league's top seed

Douglas and senior middle blocker Darian Mitchell will be a big hurdle for Emma Collins (7), Elyssa Rose and the Vikings on Tuesday.

The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team's road to the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A playoffs will go through North Bend on Tuesday night.

"If we have to play tomorrow, we will be ready for another battle," Siuslaw coach Jon Hornung said Monday morning.

Douglas beat Marshfield in four sets Monday night to earn a share of the Far West League title with the Vikings. The Trojans won 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22.

Douglas and Siuslaw will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner earning a bye into the first round of the OSAA playoffs and hosting a match Saturday, Oct. 29.

The loser of the Douglas-Siuslaw playoff, as league runnerup, will host a playin game Tuesday, Oct. 25. League No. 3 North Bend and No. 4 South Umpqua will be on the road for playin games.

The OSAA playoffs take the top 24 ranked teams. Rankings will be frozen at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Regardless of what happens Tuesday, Hornung has no plans to schedule more matches before the playoffs begin.

"I figure that we will use that time to shore up a couple of issues that we have," Horning said. "Hopefully the match (last) Thursday will be a sign of what's to come moving forward."

In that match, the Vikings dominated North Bend, 27-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16, to earn its share of the Far West League title at 8-2. Siuslaw is 11-7 overall and ranked No. 15 by the OSAA.

Douglas is 8-2 and 11-5.

Douglas and Siuslaw split their league showdowns, the Vikings winning at home on Sept. 22, 3-2, and Douglas returning the favor last Tuesday, 3-1. Douglas also beat a short-handed Siuslaw in the North Marion Fall Classic, with the Vikings missing starters Elyssa Rose, Claire Waggoner and Makenzie York.

"Siuslaw is a very good team," Douglas coach Carl Bone said. "Both times we played them (in league), they (brought) out the best in us. Every set just (seemed) so intense."
