Vikings host Tillamook in 4A state playoffs


The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team secured the Far West League's No. 1 seed in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A playoffs Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over the Douglas Trojans at North Bend High School.

The Vikings will host the Tillamook Cheesemakers in the first round of the playoffs Saturday. Time of the match has not been announced.

Tillamook swept Stayton, 3-0, in a play-in match Saturday, winning 25-14, 25-21, 25-16. The Cheesemakers finished the season ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, finishing third in the loaded Cowapa League

Siuslaw defeated Douglas 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 in a playoff for seeding after the two schools tied for the league title at 8-2.

Vikings middle blockers Elyssa Rose and Makenzie York had big nights at the net, Rose credited with 13 kills, 13 blocks and 3 aces and York with 16 kills and 11 blocks.

"We gave it all our guts and glory, and it showed tonight," York said of the match. "That fourth set, we just threw everything out there we had."

Brittany Long had 7 kills, 19 digs and 19 assists, according to Coos Bay World statistics. Abby Watkins had 13 assists and 8 digs and Maci Wells 25 digs. Brittany Long had 7 kills, 19 digs and 19 assists, according to the World.

"We played better, together, this time," Siuslaw coach Jon Hornung said. "Other times we played (Douglas), we had individual players who played better. But this match we played well as a group.

"They all took over as a group, which was fun to see. Finally, in that last match of the season, they just put it all together."

For the Trojans, Darian Mitchell had 13 kills, 15 digs and 3 aces and Rachel Hickam 12 kills, 9 digs and 3 stuff blocks.

"I think we'll do well (in the state playoffs)," Douglas coach Carl Bone said. "I think Siuslaw will do really well with their height. We're going to struggle against tall teams.

"Our two outside hitters are 5-4 and 5-5. It's kind of hard to get by those tall timbers."

The Vikings earned a bye into the first round of the state championships. Siuslaw will play a home match Saturday, Oct. 29, with the No. 5-ranked Tillamook Cheesemakers the likely opponent.

Siuslaw, No. 15 in the final OSAA Class 4A rankings, is seeded No. 8, and as such will play the team that emerges from the play-in round with the highest ranking.

For now, that would be Tillamook, the third-place team from the Cowapa League, which is sending five schools to the playoffs, including No. 1 Valley Catholic and No. 3 Banks.

Tillamook hosts Stayton on Saturday in a play-in game.

Douglas will host Sweet Home in a play-in game, while league No. 3 North Bend is at Sutherlin and No. 4 South Umpqua at Henley.
