Vikings close season on a high note, 14-13

Nick Steinman, one of eight Siuslaw Vikings honored in a pregame ceremony, also sang the national anthem before kickoff.
Junior quarterback Jared Brandt passed for one touchdown and ran for a second Friday to lead the Siuslaw Vikings to a 14-13 victory over the Brookings-Harbor Bruins on a rainy homecoming/senior recognition night at Hans Petersen Field.

"You guys dominated it," Siuslaw coach Jamin Pool said to the team at the afterglow. "I know it's 14-13, but you guys dominated. Congratulations.

"Defensively, that's what we've been trying to preach all year. You came out, and everybody did his assignment consistently. Everybody wrapped up. Everybody did what we asked of you.

"And you just destroyed it. I'm so proud of you guys. Awesome, defensively. Awesome."

Next season Siuslaw will have five games at home, three on the road.

Brookings-Harbor ended its season 1-7 overall and 0-5 in league.

The visiting Bruins scored the first points of the game on a six-play, 35-yard drive, with senior Isaiah Ross dashing in from 16 yards out on 4th-and-4.

Senior Siena Worthey kicked the extra point and Brookings-Harbor was up 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

The Vikings answered with a 51-yard scoring strike from Brandt to junior tight end Trent Reavis with 3:56 left in in the first quarter.

Brookings-Harbor retaliated with an 11-play, 68-yard drive capped by sophomore quarterback Brig Schofield's 19-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Nate Webb at the 10:10 mark of the second quarter.

Worthey's kick sailed wide right, but the Bruins had the lead back, 13-7.

The Vikings were back in the end zone less than two minutes later, Brandt on a quarterback sweep to the left side of the end zone from 6 yards out with 8:44 before halftime.

Foglio connected on his second point-after kick, and the Vikings had the lead for good.

The scoreless second half included a third quarter played entirely on Siuslaw's side of the field.

The Vikings had the ball twice, and twice went four and out.

The Bruins took the opening kickoff back to the 50, and eight plays and 15 yards later turned the ball over on downs.

Brookings-Harbor had its best chance to regain the lead on its second possession of the second half, but Quincy Rusk intercepted a pass near the goaline on a 4th-and-4 from the Siuslaw 9 for the Bruins.

The Vikings mounted a 14-play, 56-yard drive at the top of the fourth quarter, finally marching into Brookings-Harbor territory. Suislaw turned the ball over on downs at the Bruins' 10.

Brookings-Harbor then took nine plays to go 16 yards before giving the ball back on downs at their 26 with under a minute to play.

Brandt took two knees to run out the clock.
