Vikings' Marcos Reyna goes out a winner

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Siuslaw Vikings senior guard/linebacker Marcos Reyna.

For two football seasons in a row, Siuslaw's regular-season-ending game has been a nail-biter.

And for two seasons in a row, offensive guard-linebacker Marcos Reyna has contributed mightily to a Vikings win over a scrappy Brookings-Harbor Bruins team.

"I really wanted to go out with a win," Reyna said Friday after a 14-13 victory in a downpour at Hans Petersen Field.

"I feel like the team did great together, and we just got it done."

Last season's win at Brookings also was by one point, 21-20, with the Vikings driving the length of the field in the final minutes for the victory.

Reyna blocked two kicks in the final six minutes to help make that possible, including a 33-yard field-goal attempt and a point-after kick.

This year he was in the middle of a Vikings defense that pitched a shutout in the second half.

"I give props to all my teammates, but the people who really stand out to me are my fellow seniors," Reyna said. "Robert Fleming played a great game. Michael Larson. All of them. I just love 'em all."

One of the strengths of the 2016 Vikings may have been a weakness as well. Four of the starting offensive linemen were seniors, all forced to block for the new spread offense installed by first-year coach Jamin Pool.

"At first it was hard, learning the new offense," Reyna said. "But I feel we just went up against great D-linemen. And we just made some mental errors."

And, like his predecessor, Tim Dodson, Pool had the Vikings well prepared.

"Coach had a great game plan," Reyna said. "He puts a lot of work into it, breaks it down for us. It helps us on defense."

Playing five of eight games on the road also was a challenge, he said.

"It was tough. I wish we had more home games," Reyna said. "I feel like we get a better boost, teamwise, when we have the home crowd. It's a great feeling to stop and listen to the crowd, cheering for the team.

"It was great to come out with a win tonight, to make them happy and us happy."

Reyna was one of the four team leaders that Pool employs in place of team captains. The other three were fellow seniors Robert Fleming and Brogan Cornish and junior Jared Brandt.

"I'm proud of my teammates," he said. "And I'm glad I'm on the team with them."

KAINAN LANE

Friday also was the last football game for senior Kainan Lane, the Vikings' right tackle and defensive lineman.

"It was a fun year, challenging, but fun," he said. "It was nice to be with the seniors."

Lane enjoyed the challenge of blocking in Pool's new offense, saying he had little trouble adjusting to it.

"Personally, it was not too bad," he said. "I had some trouble reading sometimes, on the pulls. But it was good."

Friday, in the wake of a season-ending win, Lane was giving his attaboys to his fellow starting offensive linemen: fellow tackle Robert Fleming, guards Salvador Sierra and Marcos Reyna and center Michael Larson. All but Sierra are seniors.

"They just go so hard," he said.

As for the foul weather for homecoming and senior recognition night, Lane was in his element.

"This is Florence weather, and it makes me feel like I'm at home," he said of the rain. "If we had to do it eight games, yeah, I'd do it.

"I don't know about the receivers and the running backs, but on the line it was fun. I liked it."

JARED BRANDT

The junior member of the Vikings' four team leaders, quarterback Jared Brandt, can't wait for next season.

"I'm pretty excited for next year," he said. "We're going to be young, but we were pretty young this year. I think we can do it."

It's setting up as rebound season for the Vikings, who will be more comfortable in coach Jamin Pool's offense and will play five of their eight games before the home crowd.

Road games are to Newport, North Bend and Brookings-Harbor.

Brandt will have some serious weapons on offense with fellow seniors-to-be Trent Reavis, Evan Teter and Jakob Hickson among his favorite targets, along with running back Quincy Rusk.

But he'll miss this year's group of seniors.

"I got pretty close to Robert (Fleming). I talk to him a lot," Brandt said. "And Marcos (Reyna). I love him. And Michael (Larson), I hang out with him during the summer. And Brogan. I play all three sports (football, basketball and baseball) with him. He's awesome to have on the team. A great person, great leader. A pleasure to be around."

Brandt didn't play as a sophomore following an injury-plagued freshman season.

"I was regretting not playing with all the seniors from last year," he said. "It was great this year. I look up to (the seniors) a lot. They're just awesome people to be around. I'm going to miss them a lot."
