Vikings favored to send boys, girls to state

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Siuslaw Vikings senior Celie Mans

Siuslaw Vikings senior Celie Mans will be favored to defend her district title Thursday when the Far West League cross country championships are held at Tugman State Park.

Mans has a season best of 18 minutes, 36 seconds, which she ran Sept. 14 at the Tugman Invitational. The time matches the one she ran in winning last year's Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A individual title at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Jazmin Chavez of Marshfield has the district's second-best time this season of 19:05.3.

The Vikings girls are defending district and state champions.

Based on season times, Athletic.net has the Vikings girls finishing second to North Bend on Thursday, with the Vikings boys finishing second to Marshfield. The top two teams advance to the state championships.

Athletic.net hypothetical results have the North Bend girls scoring 38 points, placing No. 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10, and Siuslaw 60, placing 1 (Mans), 12 (Hannah Rannow), 14 (Kaeli Ramos), 16 (Anne Wartnik) and 17 (Destinie Tatum).

South Umpqua would be third at 65, followed by Marshfield at 72 and Brookings-Harbor at 125. Douglas does not have enough runners to field a girls team.

On the boys side, Athletic.net has Marshfield at 46 points, placing 3, 6, 8, 13 and 16, and Siuslaw 53, placing 4 (Isaac Griffes), 5 (Jack Pickell), 12 (Kiger Johnson), 14 (Brendon Jensen) and 18 (Jordan Northrop).

North Bend would be third at 61, followed by Brookings-Harbor at 91, South Umpqua at 113 and Douglas at 173.

North Bend senior Michael Brown has the league's top time this season, 16:07.7, which he ran at the Tugman Invitational.

Tugman State Park is 15 miles north of North Bend on Highway 101, just north of the Lakeside exit.

Douglas is the host school, with North Bend serving as co-host. Douglas athletic director Kevin Wilson is meet director and John Gunther the meet referee.

Siuslaw assistant coach Steve Moser will serve as starter.
