Vikings to say goodbye to 3 league schools

Say goodbye to Marshfield, North Bend and South Umpqua by the 2018-19 school year.

And say hello, possibly, to Cottage Grove, Creswell, Elmira and Sutherlin.

The new Far West League would drop the three current schools and add those four schools under a new classification and districting model under consideration by the Oregon School Activities Association.

The OSAA is considering both six- and five-classification models for the years 2018 to 2022.

Under the six-classification model, Siuslaw would be part of the following seven-school Far West League (with 2015-16 enrollments in parentheses):

  • Brookings Harbor Bruins (449)
  • Cottage Grove Lions (648)
  • Creswell Bulldogs (342)
  • Douglas Trojans (352)
  • Elmira Falcons (345)
  • Siuslaw Vikings (347)
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs (357)

North Bend and Marshfield would move to the 5A Southern Oregon League, joining Ashland, Crater, Eagle Point, Springfield and Thurston.

South Umpqua would join the 4A Skyline Conference with Henley, Hidden Valley, Klamath Union, Mazama, North Valley and Phoenix.

Under the five-classification model, Siuslaw would be part of the following six-school 3A Mountain Valley Conference:

  • Brookings-Harbor Bruins (449)
  • Creswell Bulldogs (342)
  • Douglas Trojans (352)
  • Pleasant Hill Billies (294)
  • Siuslaw Vikings (347)
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs (357)

North Bend and Marshfield would move to the 4A Southern Oregon League, joining Ashland, Crater, Eagle Point, Klamath Union and Phoenix.

South Umpqua would move to the 3A Southern Cascade League, joining Cascade, Henley, Hidden Valley, Illinois Valley, Mazama, North Valley and St. Mary's (Medford).

The OSAA also is considering a separate classification model for football only.

The next public meeting of the Classification and Districting Committee is 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at the OSAA office, 25200 SW Parkway Avenue, Suite 1, in Wilsonville.

The committee will take public testimony in the morning and hold a closed work session in the afternoon.

The committee will hold several meetings through September 2017, and send its final recommendations to the OSAA Executive Board in October 2017.
