Vikings open with Icebreaker on March 23

The Siuslaw Vikings track and field team opens its season Thursday, March 23, with the Siuslaw Icebreaker at Hans Petersen Field.

Field events start at 4 p.m., track events at 4:30 p.m.

Schools competing include Douglas, Myrtle Point, North Bend and South Umpqua.

The Vikings girls placed second in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A championships this past May at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Top returning athletes include state 800-meter champion Destinie Tatum and fellow seniors Celie Mans, Carissa Oliver and Annmarie Precht.

Mans, the two-time state cross country champion, was third place at 3,000 meters and seventh at 1,500 meters last spring.

Oliver placed third in the shot put with a personal-record 39 feet, 10 inches and fourth in the discus at 117-3.

Precht posted personal records in placing fifth at 100 meters and fourth at 200 meters. She also was fourth in the long jump at 16-10.

The Vikings boys were 12th at state with only two entries, field specialist Trent Reavis and distance runner Murray Bingham. Bingham has since moved from the Florence area.

Reavis was third in the shot put and fifth in the discus as a sophomore.

First official practice is Feb. 27.

  • Friday, April 21 — Central Coast Invitational, 4 p.m., Hans Petersen Field.
  • Saturday, April 22 — 53rd annual Centennial Invitational, Gresham High School.
  • Friday, April 28 — Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays.
  • Saturday, April 29 — 68th annual Grants Pass Rotary Invitational.
  • Friday, May 5 — Wally Ciochetti Invitational, Cottage Grove High School.
  • Friday, May 12 — Far West League Championships, North Bend High School.
  • Friday-Saturday, May 19-20 — OSAA Class 4A state championships, Hayward Field, Eugene.
