Vikings pay a price for missing free throws

The Siuslaw Vikings boys basketball team continues to score well from the field, while falling short at the free-throw line.

Tuesday, the Vikings lost by nine points at Newport, 62-53, and missed 18 free throws, hitting 9 of 27.

Juniors Trent Reavis and Jake Hickson led the Vikings in scoring with 25 and 12 points, respectively.

The loss dropped Siuslaw to 1-2 on the season with the next game against Junction City at 7 p.m. Friday in the Les Schwab Eagle Booster Tournament at Harrisburg High School.

The loss to Newport comes on the heels of a seven-point loss to Elmira in a game in which the Vikings missed 15 of 26 free throws.

"I saw lots of improvement from our team in our first road game," Siuslaw coach Dylan Perry said. "Unfortunately, missed free throws and careless turnovers sunk the Vikings ship tonight.

"No loss is a good loss, but I saw some good things that we will continue to build off of."

Perry is looking forward to Friday's game with Junction City.

"They always play a very physical game, so it will be another great test for our squad," he said.

Next home game for Siuslaw is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, against Cascade.
