Siuslaw Vikings junior 126-pounder Richard Huff won all three of his bouts Thursday, Dec. 29, in the multi-school dual wrestling tournament at Elmira High School.
"We were short-handed, but the team wrestled great," Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said. "We had only five wrestlers in the varsity lineup, so we were spotting our opponents up to 54 points in each dual. Nonetheless, the team did a great job, especially in the last two dual meets. Richard Huff was particularly outstanding."
The Vikings lost their four dual meets, 36-21 to Sweet Home, 57-18 to Forest Grove, 42-23 to Elmira and 51-6 to Sheldon.
Huff was the only Viking to win against Sheldon, pinning Theodore Coombs in 41 seconds.
Huff also pinned Bryce Porter of Sweet home in 1:10 and beat Hunter Davis of Elmira by technical fall, 21-5.
Senior 170-pounder Nick Steinman was 2-1 for Siuslaw, including pins against John Rasmussen of Forest Grove in 1:30 and Mikey Montgomery of Elmira in 1:05.
Senior Eyza Abbas was 2-1 in the girls tournament and senior Kainan Lane 2-0 in the junior-varsity competition.
"Count up the wins and losses and we were 17-9 on the day," Wartnik noted. "We are hoping to get a couple kids healthy and get a couple of our snowbirds home.
"Though we are short-handed, team morale is great, and the individual improvement is exciting."
The Vikings' meet Thursday, Jan. 5, at Brookings-Harbor was postponed because of weather.
Siuslaw's big home meet, the Nick Lutz Memorial Tournament, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14.
