Vikings score 407.5 points in Oregonian Cup


The Siuslaw Vikings totaled 407.5 points this past fall to stand 22nd among 40 Class 4A schools in The Oregonian Cup, which recognizes "overall excellence by schools in academics, activities and athletics" for the school year, it was announced Thursday (Jan. 12).

The annual award, which began in 1999, is sponsored by The Oregonian, which is the newspaper with the largest daily circulation in the Northwest.

Valley Catholic leads Class 4A schools with 945 points, with North Bend second with 872.5 and Philomath third with 805.

Brookings-Harbor, with 500 points, is No. 15 in the state and No. 2 in the Far West League behind North Bend.

Siuslaw is No. 3 in the six-school Far West league, followed by No. 24 South Umpqua, No. 29 Marshfield and No. 38 Douglas.

According to the Oregon School Activities Association website, the "award honors a school's students, coaches and the entire school community."

Central Catholic leads 6A schools with 1,002.5 points, Summitt Class 5A with 1,100, Catlin Gabel Class 3A with 750, Delphins Class 2A with 700 and Crane is tied with Crosshill Christian in 1A at 585.
