Siuslaw Awards will honor a Viking senior


The five Future First Citizen finalists for the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce's Siuslaw Awards 2016 have some outstanding athletic credentials.

The nominees, all Siuslaw Vikings seniors, include Benjamin Cahoon, Celie Mans, Elyssa Rose, Destinie Tatum and Claire Waggoner.

All four Lady Vikings are members of the National Honor Society and are active in school government and service clubs.

Mans is the two-time state Class 4A cross country champion as well as a standout in track and field. She is the daughter of Robert Mans and Julie Kittock Mans.

Rose is a perennial volleyball all-star who helped lead the Vikings to the Far West League title this past season. She is the daughter of Michael and Michelle Rose.

Tatum is the defending state champion in the girls Class 4A 800 meters and a standout on the girls basketball team. She is the daughter of Clint and Kerri Tatum.

Waggoner, the school's student body president, is a standout and team leader in volleyball, basketball and softball, and plans to play college softball. She is the daughter of Dan and Jennifer Waggoner.

Cahoon, an accomplished artist, has been active in pep band, the Viking Hour and Key Club. He is the son of Ahern and Trudie Cahoon.

The Siuslaw Awards dinner is Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Florence Events Center.
