Vikings win 4 of 6 matches but lose dual


The Siuslaw Vikings won 4 of the 6 battles but lost the dual-match war in a wrestling match Tuesday at Philomath.

Vikings Joaquin Cervantes (145 pounds), Nick Steinman (170), Clark Hooper (182) and Matthew Horrillo (285) all won with pins, while Richard Huff (113) and Eyza Abbas Carrasco (120) won by forfeit.

Philomath won the match 39-36 with wins at 152 pounds (over the Vikings' Salvador Sierra, 7-4) and 160 pounds (Rilley Jennings, pinned in second round) and forfeit wins in five weight classes (126, 132, 138, 195 and 220).

Abbas Carrasco also competed in a girls match, losing by pin in the second round.

The Vikings have at least three meets left on their season, Feb. 1 at the Far West League tournament in North Bend, Feb. 3-4 at the Cottage Grove Invitational and Feb. 10-11 at the Special District Tournament at South Umpqua.

The Class 4A state championships are Feb. 24-25 in Portland.
