Siuslaw junior Richard Huff is seeded No. 1 at 113 pounds in the Special District 3 Regional wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at South Umpqua High School in Tri City.

Three other Vikings are seeded in the top six, according to Vikings coach Neil Wartnik. The top five in each weight class qualify for state.

At 152 pounds, Siuslaw sophomore Riley Jennings is seeded No. 5.

At 285, senior Kainan Lane is seeded No. 4 and freshman Matthew Horrillo No. 6.

Huff, 30-3 for the season, is coming off another tournament title, this one at the 33-school Cottage Grove Invitational.

"Richard looked great — though ill — in winning the 113-pound weight class," Wartnik said. "He was spectacular in the finals, pinning his opponent in the first round."

Jennings placed fifth in the tournament and Horrillo had a good tournament with three pins.

"Riley knocked off the No. 3 seed en route to a fifth-place finish," Wartnik said. "This is one of the highest placements achieved by a Vikings sophomore at the Cottage Grove Invitational.

"Matthew also did a good job, winning three matches in the 285 division and falling just shy of placing."

Senior Eyza Abbas Carasco placed sixth among 30 wrestlers in her weight class at a separate girls state qualifying tournament. She won three matches to gain the semifinals, but lost the last three to fall short of qualifying for state.

The Vikings have nine wrestlers entered this weekend at South Umpqua. Only Brookings-Harbor, of the 12 schools entered, has a smaller roster, with seven.

Marshfield has 23, Mazama and Henley 21, Phoenix 18, Hidden Valley 15, Douglas and North Bend 13, North Valley 12, South Umpqua 11 and Klamath Union 10.

The state tournament is Feb. 24-25 at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
