Vikings' Huff gains semis in state qualifier


It took Siuslaw junior Richard Huff 25 seconds Friday to reach the semifinals of the 113-pound division at the Special District 3 wrestling tournament at South Umpqua High School in Tri City.

Huff, the No. 1 seed in his weight class, won by forfeit in the first round and pinned Jonah Kugler of Mazama in 25 seconds in the quarterfinals.

Two Vikings lost their first-round matches, Joaquin Cervantes at 138 and Jesus Sierra at 145.

Five Vikings received first-round byes, Eyza Abbas Carrasco at 120, Riley Jennings at 152, Nick Steinman at 170 and Kainan Lane and Matthew Horrillo at 285.

Jennings is seeded No. 5 in his weight class, while at 285, Lane is seeded No. 4 and Horrillo No. 6.

Finals of the two-day event are Saturday.

The top five in each weight class qualify for the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A state championships Feb. 24-25 at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
