Vikings open 2017 season at home Friday

The Vikings are well-armed with Siuslaw senior Michael Larson, left, and Mapleton sophomore Gabe Simington.

The Siuslaw Vikings baseball team opened spring practice Monday, Feb. 27, with opening day Friday, March 24, at home against Sweet Home.

A game scheduled for March 18 at Taft has been canceled.

Siuslaw is expected to return a strong one-two pitching combination of senior Michael Larson and Mapleton sophomore Gabe Simington.

Other top returning players include third baseman Jared Brandt, first baseman Brogan Cornish, outfielder Darren Stinnett and catcher Evan Teter.

The Vikings are coached by Tony Castro. Assistant coaches are David Snow and Randy Paredes.

Siuslaw was 8-15 overall and 5-10 in the Far West League last spring.
