Where will the Vikings compete in 2018?

The Siuslaw Vikings now have four possible outcomes to ponder after the most-recent meeting of the Oregon School Activities Association's Classification and District Committee.

Maybe five, if the less likely football-only option returns from life support, as the OSAA works to finalize plans for the 2018-22 four-year time block.

The committee released Drafts 10, 11, 12 and 13 on Friday, March 3, with the advisory that it plans to "support one of the classification approaches at the conclusion of the March 20 meeting."

Drafts Nos. 10 and 11 maintain the six-classification model, while Drafts Nos. 12 and 13 change to a five-classification model.

Under the first two, Siuslaw remains in a revised Far West League. Under the second two, Siuslaw moves to a revised Sky-Em League.

Proposed six-classification models (Siuslaw in revised Far West League):
Draft 10

  • Bandon Tigers
  • Coquille Red Devils
  • Douglas Trojans
  • Rogue River Chieftains
  • Siuslaw Vikings
  • South Umpqua Lancers
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs

Draft 11

  • Brookings-Harbor Bruins
  • Cottage Grove Lions
  • Creswell Bulldogs
  • Douglas Trojans
  • Elmira Falcons
  • Siuslaw Vikings
  • South Umpqua Lancers
  • Sutherlin Bulldogs

The Vikings would face a three-hour trip in either model, to Rogue River (south of Grants Pass) in Draft 10 or to Brookings-Harbor in Draft 11.

Proposed five-classification models (Siuslaw in revised Sky-Em League):
Draft 12

  • Cottage Grove Lions
  • Elmira Falcons
  • Harrisburg Eagles
  • La Pine Hawks
  • Pleasant Hill Billies
  • Santiam Christian Eagles (Adair Village, north of Corvallis)
  • Sisters Outlaws
  • Siuslaw Vikings

Draft 13

  • Creswell Bulldogs
  • Elmira Falcons
  • Harrisburg Eagles
  • Junction City Tigers
  • La Pine Hawks
  • Philomath Warriors
  • Pleasant Hill Billies
  • Sisters Outlaws
  • Siuslaw Vikings

The committee still may consider football-only special districts.

"Over the past two meetings, the committee has felt a lack of support for the football-only classification," the committee said in minutes from its Feb. 27 meeting. "At this time, the committee is not submitting drafts for the membership to review."

The committee is strongly encouraging input from member schools in support of one of the draft proposals before its next meeting.

The next public meeting of the committee is 9 a.m. Monday, March 20, at the OSAA office in Wilsonville, 25200 SW Parkway Avenue, Suite 1.
