Siuslaw teams up with American Red Cross

Siuslaw High School and the American Red Cross are teaming up for a blood drive from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 17, at the school's main gym.

There will be six slots available every 15 minutes, so that's 24 units an hour over five hours for a total goal of 120 units.

The school held a blood drive in November and collected 37 units.

"We exceeded our goal that day, so (the American Red Cross) agreed to let us do a bigger one on March 17," principal Kerri Tatum said. "We want to get the 120 so we can continue to have these drives."

Spearheading the effort is Tatum's daughter, Destinie, a senior at the school.

"There used to be more blood drives at SHS, but not in the last four years," Tatum said. "They contacted me at the beginning of the year and I mentioned it to Destinie and she ran with it.

"The entire leadership class is helping her."

To schedule your donation, visit the school office or email Destinie at destiraye@gmail.com.

"We prefer to schedule, but walk-ins will be welcome," Tatum said.
