Vikings' rally falls short vs. Cheesemakers

Siuslaw Vikings senior pitcher Heidi Jones was named Coast Radio's athlete of the week on Tuesday.

The Tillamook Cheesemakers pushed three runs across in the top of the fourth inning and held on to beat the host Siuslaw Vikings, 4-3, in a nonleague girls softball game Tuesday.

The Vikings, 3-5, losing their third 1-run game in their past 4 outings, are scheduled to visit Coquille at 3 p.m. Thursday in their final game before the start of Far West League play.

Siuslaw travels to Marshfield to open league play at 5 p.m. this coming Tuesday.

"(We) had a solid defensive game with no errors behind (Heidi) Jones pitching," Siuslaw coach Sean O'Mara said. "The team struggled to hit anything but ground outs and pop flies though as the offense failed to produce in clutch situations, like bases loaded in the bottom of the second and (Mia) Collins at second (base) with no outs in the bottom of the seventh (inning) and the top of the batting order coming up."

The Vikings had some tough luck early.

In the first, the Vikings plated a run on an RBI single by senior Claire Waggoner and had runners on first and second with 1 out. The next 2 batters popped out to the first baseman.

In the second, the Vikings loaded the bases with no out, but went 1-2-3 on a pop out to the catcher, a force out at home and a groundout to end the inning.

In the third, the Vikings put the first 2 runners on base, scored 1 run, but left a runner stranded at third.

Siuslaw had a chance in the seventh. Freshman left-fielder Mia Collins was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second and scored on senior Jones' single to center as the Vikings cut the lead to 4-3.

The Vikings had the tying run on second with none out, but Jones was cut down trying to take third base, and the rally fizzled.

Jones was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Siuslaw.

Tillamook senior Devanie Donaldson was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

It was the first win of the season for the Cheesemakers (1-4), who started 5 freshmen, including winning pitcher Lili Vogel.
