Vikings fall to 0-10 after 12-6 loss to Pirates

Freshman pitcher Caleb Hennessee tossed four strong innings before tiring in the fifth.

The Siuslaw Vikings baseball team finally got its day in the sun Saturday, and its first home game.

That's after nearly seven long weeks since the first day of practice and nine road losses.

In a seven-inning game that may have seemed like seven weeks, the Marshfield Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Vikings with a 12-6 victory at John "Jiggs" Dodson Field.

The loss dropped Siuslaw to 0-10 on the season and 0-3 in the Far West League.

Marshfield is 4-4-1 and atop the league at 3-0.

The Vikings next plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Douglas, then hosts the Trojans in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday.

Siuslaw's pitching staff hopes to be rested after being tested with 3 games in 2 days.

Saturday, the Vikings started a freshman, Caleb Hennessee, and finished with a freshman, Jared Northrop. In between, coach Tony Castro turned to senior second baseman Brogan Cornish.

The Pirates countered with four pitchers of their own.

When all was said and done, the two teams combined for some big numbers.

There were 18 runs on 18 hits — 6 of each by Siuslaw and 12 of each by Marshfield.

There were 26 runners left on base — 14 by Siuslaw and 12 by Marshfield.

There were 21 walks issued — 10 by Siuslaw pitchers and 11 by Marshfield pitchers.

There were 15 strikeouts — 9 by Siuslaw pitchers and 6 by Marshfield pitchers.

And there was a bit of weirdness.

One Marshfield reliever walked all 5 batters he faced, forcing home 3 runs in the process.

Marshfield defenders dropped 3 pop flies in a row, and had 2 outs to show for it, the first on an infield-fly rule and the second on a force out at third base.

And then there was the 10-minute break at the end of the fifth inning after the umpire experienced a wardrobe malfunction.

He had split his pants and had to slip away to replace them.
