Vikings gear up for annual big home meet

Two-time girls 4A cross country champion Celie Mans likely will be the favorite to win the 3,000 in next month's state championships.

Siuslaw's annual big home track-and-field meet of the season, the Central Coast Invitational, is this Friday, and there will be eight Vikings at the event currently sporting state Class 4A top-10 season marks.

Field events get underway at 4 p.m., track events at 5:30.

Heading the eight Vikings with top marks is senior Celie Mans, who is in the top 5 this season in three events — the 3,000 meters, the 1,500 and the 800.

The two-time 4A cross-country champion bolted to the top of the class in the 3,000 at the Oregon Relays this past weekend, clocking 10 minutes, 39.38 seconds.

It's the best girls 4A time this season by more than a half minute. And Mans did it on the same track — the University of Oregon's venerable Hayward Field — she will run in the state championships May 19-20.

Coach Chris Johnson on the Oregon Relays:

  • The Oregon Relays is a great test.  It can be an intimidating venue, and the competition is amazing.  A big mark at Hayward Field really resonates.
  • Carissa Oliver continues to really improve.  She's always been good, but now she's starting to really handle the ups and downs of a track and field meet.  The 40-foot throw in the shot is a great benchmark.  That puts her in an elite class for high school throwers to go along with her throwing over 130 in the discus twice last week.
  • Clark Hooper ran a great race in the 110HH.  That moves him to No. 6 all-time on the school top 10 list.
  • It was also great to see Trent Reavis have a good throw in the javelin. I've always known that a good javelin thrower was in there and (assistant) Coach (Collin) Cram is getting him to a new level.

Johnson, looking ahead to CCI:

  • Just fun to watch everyone get better. Fun to see that some of this hard work is paying off. I think we will see a lot of good marks as the weather continues to get warmer.
  • Track season is too short and it's a week shorter this year due to the NCAA West Regional at Hayward Field over Memorial Day weekend.  We never feel like we have enough time.

Mans also is No. 2 in the 1,500 this season in 4:58.16 and No. 5 in the 800 in 2:33.07.

Other Vikings girls in the top 10:

  • Senior Carissa Oliver is No. 2 in both the shot put and the discus. She set a personal-record in the shot put of 40 feet, 5.5 inches at the Oregon Relays.
  • Freshman Hannah Rannow is No. 7 in the 3,000 in 11:45.24 and No. 9 in the 1,500 in 5:18.82.
  • Senior Destinie Tatum, the reigning 4A 800-meter champion, is No. 7 in the 400 in 1:03.30.

Vikings boys in the top 10:

  • Junior Trent Reavis is in the top 5 in three events — No. 3 in the shot put at 50-9, No. 5 in the discus at 143-1 and No. 5 in the javelin at 164-7.5. His javelin mark is a PR set at the Oregon Relays over the weekend.
  • Senior Clark Hooper is No. 3 in the 110 hurdles with a personal-record 15.65 set at the Oregon Relays. He is No. 4 in the 300 hurdles in 42.13.
  • Senior Jack Pickell is No. 3 in the 3,000 in 9:29.60, set at the Oregon Relays, and No. 9 in the 1,500 in 4:22.66.
  • Freshman Ryan Rendon-Padilla is No. 7 in the javelin at 163-7.
