5 Vikings will walk the talk at championships


Siuslaw High School teacher Lancy Haberly is the "head coach" for the Vikings' 5-member team at state.

If you are interested in a high school championship that is all talk, welcome to the Oregon School Activities Association/United States Bank/Les Schwab Tires Speech State Championships, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Five Siuslaw Vikings are entered in an event that is expected to include more than 500 high school students in all divisions from across the state.

Titles are up for grabs in debate, student congress, individual events and after-dinner speaking.

The after-dinner finals are 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and the individual championships are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Debate finals begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by an awards ceremony.

Admission is free.

Competing for the Vikings are Hannah Anderson, Katherine Dodson, Kiyah Cleveland, Karina Shipstad and Heather Sanford.

Anderson will compete in both expository speaking and radio commentary, Dodson in memorized humorous and Cleveland in poetry reading.

Shipstad and Sanford will compete as a team in dual interpretation.
