Reavis, Tatum, Oliver, Hooper shine at CCI

Siuslaw runners Destinie Tatum and Celie Mans get post-800-race analysis from coaches Collin Cram (left) and Chris Johnson (right).

Siuslaw's annual Central Coast Invitational often serves as a barometer for the Vikings' track and field season.

"It feels like we get to this point in the season every year, and it's kind of a benchmark to be at home," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said Friday at the CCI at Hans Petersen Field. "Today's a good day. We always seem to have good performances here.

"That's the thing about track and field: You're always going to have some good things to go home and talk about."

There were a number of good things, including a Siuslaw boys school record of 160 feet, 2 inches in the discus by junior Trent Reavis.

"I'm sure he's pretty excited," Johnson said of Reavis. "It's definitely the highlight of the meet."

But there was more.

Senior Destinie Tatum, the defending state champion at 800 meters, clocked the state's best Class 4A time of 2 minutes, 23.58 seconds to win in her season debut at the distance.

Tatum also won the girls high jump at 4-6.

Senior thrower Carissa Oliver also won two events, the girls shot put at 40-4 and the discus at 134-1, while setting a personal-record 103-11 to finish third in the javelin.

Reavis also won the shot put at 49-9 in a showdown with Newport senior Will Beaudry, while finishing second in the javelin by 2 inches (156-8) to freshman teammate Ryan Rendon-Padilla (156-10).

Senior hurdler Clark Hooper ran a personal-record 41.91a in win the boys 300-meter hurdles, while clocking a 16.04a in the 110 hurdles for second place behind Cody Webb of 5A Dallas.

Senior Jack Pickell was second in the boys 3,000 in a personal-record 9:28.48a, the third-best 4A time this season.

Sophomore Madison Reynolds was second to Oliver in the girls shot put at 33-9.5.

Senior Ryan Alletson went a personal-record 5-4 to tie for second in the boys high jump.

DEALING WITH DESTINIE

Destinie Tatum defends her state 800 title in four weeks, and Johnson thought the CCI was the perfect meet to put her on that path.

"I had a good feeling this was the right atmosphere and the right setting and the right time of the season to debut," Johnson said. "It was a great time for her, and I am happy for her."

Tatum won the 800 last season in a school-record 2:17.62a.

"Destinie hasn't run an 800 this year, and that's by design," Johnson said. "We wanted to work on speed a little bit and try to get her a chance to get fit.

"She comes off a long basketball season and is always kind of beat up. To throw someone who is a state champion into the 800, where the expectations are so high, it isn't realistic for her to run the times she'd be happy with."

So Friday's race was a good metric for Tatum down the stretch to state.

"There's probably a point in there (during Friday's race) where she started to doubt herself," Johnson said. "Then the real Destinie showed up, and she roared home."

MANS TO SOLO AT TWILIGHT

Siuslaw senior Celie Mans, the two-time girls 4A state cross country champion, will be the only Viking at Friday's Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays.

Mans will run the 3,000 meters, an event she has the state's best 4A time (10:39.38a) this season.

"Everyone else is going to (Saturday's) Grants Pass Invitational," Johnson said. "Grants Pass hasn't been a good place to run 3,000 because of the heat.

"We get up at 4 in the morning, drive all day, sit there in the sun, and then run late. I try not to run anybody in (the 3,000)."

Mans currently has top-5 state times in the 800 (5th at 2:25.93a set the the CCI), the 1,500 (3rd at 4:58.16a set at the Siuslaw Icebreaker) and the 3,000 (1st set at the Oregon Relays).

"That's a great time," Johnson said of Mans' 800 at the CCI. "She's not an 800-meter runner, and for her to run a 2:25 like that is fantastic."

NOTES

Vikings freshman Jared Northrop was 15th in the 3,000 meters in 10:44.98a. What makes that impressive is that he played a doubleheader for the Siuslaw baseball team before racing over to run the 3,000. ...

Newport senior Will Beaudry — who finished second to Reavis in both the shot put and discus Friday — is the Class 4A leader in the discus at 177-7, No. 2 in the shot put at 52-10 and No. 10 in the javelin at 161-6.5. ...
