Ramos, Griffes to lead returning Vikings

There will be big shoes to fill when the Siuslaw Vikings open their 2017 cross-country season.

For the girls, there's two-time state 4A champion Celie Mans and defending state 4A 800-meter champion Destinie Tatum.

Mans plans to attend the University of Idaho and compete in cross country and track and field.

For the boys, there is Jack Pickell, the only member of the boys team to qualify for the 2016 state cross country championships. Also graduating are Clark Hooper, Ryan Alletson and Sean Burns.

Pickell plans to attend Montana State-Billings and compete in cross country and track and field.

The cupboard is far from bare for the Vikings. But it will be filled with young runners.

Five of the returning six girls will be sophomores and four of the returning seven boys will be sophomores.

Senior-to-be Isaac Griffes holds the top returning time among the boys, 17 minutes, 21.8 seconds for 5,000 meters.

Kiger Johnson has the top returning time among the sophomores to be, 18:21.8.

Junior to be Kaeli Ramos has the top returning time among the girls of 20:45.0, which she set two seasons ago.

Hannah Rannow has the top returning time among the sophomores to be, 21:22.2.

The Vikings will open their 2017 schedule with the Athletic Timing meet Thursday, Aug. 31, at Independence.

The next race is the Ash Creek Festival, Sept. 9, in Monmouth, followed by the Northwest Classic, Sept. 16, at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Siuslaw's annual Woahink Lake Invitational is set for Sept. 30 at Honeyman State Park.

The Vikings also are entered in the Paul Mariman Invitational on Oct. 7 at Philomath High School and the George Fox Classic on Oct. 14 at Willamette Mission State Park in Gervais.
