Vikings cherish some fine senior moments

Siuslaw coach Sean O'Mara is saying goodbye to seven seniors, including Claire Waggoner, who is heading to George Fox University.

The Siuslaw Vikings softball team saluted their seven seniors in a ceremony before Monday night's Far West League game with visiting North Bend.

Each senior was introduced by school principal Kerri Tatum, who shared the player's future plans, favorite softball memory and advice to returning softball athletes.

The seniors, in order of their introduction:

No. 6 — Jenicah Ecker (parents Neil and Vanessa Ecker)

  • Future plans — Jenicah plans to go to college and become a psychologist.
  • Favorite softball memory — Anytime anyone was goofing off and fell.
  • Advice for returning softball athletes — Always give 110 percent.

No. 9 — Nikki Launius (parents Nathan and Rhonda Lowder)

  • Future plans — Attend Linn-Benton Community College and then transfer to Oregon State to earn a degree in physical therapy.
  • Favorite softball memory — Softball has been such a big and important part of life up to this point, that she really couldn't choose just one memory. Every day Nikki gets to be on the field with what she considers to be amazing girls and an amazing coaching staff, and Nikki feels grateful for the opportunity to grow close with them all. For Nikki, softball has been a blessing.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Love the game, give 100 percent of what you have every day.

No. 11 — Heidi Jones (parents Robert Jones and Shannon Slaughter)

  • Future plans — Attend Linn-Benton Community college, transfer to Oregon State to earn a pharmacy degree, and eventually move to Bend.
  • Favorite softball memory — The bus rides to Brookings, team bonding with Jodi, and winning games.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Softball is a team sport, so do everything in your power to lift your teammates up on a daily basis.

No. 14 — Sara Keel (parents Vernon and Melissa Keel)

  • Future plans — Attend Southwestern Oregon Community College, then transfer to a university to become a dental hygienist.
  • Favorite softball memory — When we beat Marshfield.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Play every game like it is your last because when you are a senior, you are going to wish you had just one more season.

No. 15 — Claire Waggoner (parents Dan and Jennifer Waggoner)

  • Future plans — Attend George Fox University and continue to play softball there.
  • Favorite softball memory — Hitting my first home run on our home field and coming around to home to celebrate it with my teammates.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Never forget why you fell in love with the game. There are a lot of frustrating aspects to the game of softball, but what gets you through those times is remembering why you love the game. Work hard and have fun. It really does go by fast.

No. 21 — Katherine Dodson (mother Marcy Dodson)

  • Future plans — Attend Lane Community College.
  • Favorite softball memory — Practicing sliding on the slip-'n'-slide.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Teamwork makes the dream work.

No. 27 — Chehalis Stinger (father Eric Stinger)

  • Future plans — Attending Portland State University and become a special education teacher.
  • Favorite softball memory — She has many, but the best ones were made with all the seniors.
  • Advice to returning softball athletes — Enjoy everyday you have on the field. Love your teammates, learn to laugh with your teammates, and work hard everyday.

Coach Sean O'Mara also acknowledged the many hours spent by "outstanding volunteer coaches" Jamie Hunt, Shari Fisher and Kim Gibson.

"These coaches have had a long-term, positive impact on our athletes' lives well beyond the game of softball itself," O'Mara said. "We are lucky to have them in this program, and thank them for all they have done."
