It's the last hurrah for Mans, Oliver, Tatum

It's first things first for state title contenders Celie Mans, Carissa Oliver and Destine Tatum of the Siuslaw Vikings track and field team.

First, the three seniors will defend district titles Friday and Saturday at the Far West League championships at North Bend's Frank Shriver Track.

"Destinie is only doing the 800 and the 4x400," Vikings coach Chris Johnson said. "Carissa won the discus and shot put last year and will be in both, only. Celie is in the 1,500 and 3,000 and the 4x400.

"We can't match up with Marshfield's depth, so we are paring down our entries to give the girls the best chance to qualify for state in the events they have a good chance to be high placers."

All three already have met state qualifying standards, Tatum in the 800, Mans in the 3,000 and Oliver in both the discus and shot put.

Mans won the district 1,500 meters and finished second in the 3,000 in 2016, while Oliver won the shot put and discus.

All Tatum did was win three individual district titles — 400, 800 and high jump — while anchoring the Vikings' district-champion girls 4x400 relay team.

Each of the three can see a clear path to a state title.

Tatum looks to defend her state 800 title. She set the Siuslaw school record of 2:17.62a in last year's state finals, and clocked a season-best 2:23.58 at the Central Coast Invitational on April 21.

Mans, the two-time state 4A cross country champion, will focus on the 1,500 and 3,000 at district and state. Her time of 10:17.77 at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays on April 28 is the best girls 4A time this season.

Oliver has her sights on district titles and possible state titles. Her shot put (41-7.5) and discus (136-5) marks this season are second to only to Molalla senior Rachel Bring.

Bring has a girls 4A state-best of 44-0 in the shot put and 144-6 in the discus.

Friday, Mans will run the girls 3,000 finals at 10:30 a.m. and Oliver will compete in the shot put, with finals at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Oliver defends her discus title at noon, Mans her 1,500 title at 12:15 p.m. and Tatum her 800 title at 1:30 p.m.

Then the Vikings turn their attention to state, with the Class 4A championships May 19-20, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
