Top student-athletes to be honored May 31

Siuslaw and Mapleton high schools' top athletes will be honored at the sixth annual Athletic Recognition Evening of Excellence at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at Siuslaw High School.

A total of 38 student-athletes will be saluted, and the Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year will be announced, according to a news release from Bob Sneddon, the event's master of ceremonies.

Admission is free, as is the dessert that will be catered by Kyle Lewis and the Culinary Arts Class at Siuslaw High School.

Service will be provided by Siuslaw High School Leadership and entertainment by the Vikings' cheerleaders.

The event is organized and co-sponsored by the Sports Club, a group of area businesses that promotes the Athlete of the Week in the Siuslaw News and on Coast Radio during the school year.

"The other co-sponsor is the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club," Sneddon said. "The club participates as a way to further recognize the accomplishments, not only of the student-athletes, but also their families and friends who support them through the year."

Finalists for the female and male athletes of the year will be announced prior to May 31.
