Tough opener for Dengler, Humboldt State

Lona Dengler (Siuslaw 2013) is the starting right fielder for the Humboldt State softball team.

Siuslaw graduate Lona Dengler was 0-for-3 Thursday as her Humboldt State Lumberjacks lost their NCAA Division II softball championships opener to the Angelo State Rambelles, 5-1, in Salem, Virginia.

Angelo State (San Angelo, Texas) is the top seed in the eight-school championships, Humboldt State (Arcata, Calif.) the No. 8 seed.

Dengler, starting in right field for the Lumberjacks, struck out twice and grounded out in three plate appearances.

Dengler, a 2013 Siuslaw graduate, played two years at Southwestern Oregon Community College before transfering to Humboldt State.

Humboldt State next plays an elimination game Friday, against either West Virginia Wesleyan (Buckhannon, W.Va.) or Molloy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
