This season's NCAA Division II softball national championship experience for Siuslaw graduate Lona Dengler came to an end Saturday in Salem, Virginia.
No. 3 seed Armstrong State (Savanna, Georgia) broke a scoreless tie with 5 runs in the top of the seventh to eliminate Dengler's Humboldt State team, 5-1.
Humboldt State was seeking its third national title. The Lumberjacks were champions in 1999 and 2008.
Dengler was 0-for-2 in the game, reaching base on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of the third inning and popping out to the shortstop with 1 out in the fifth.
Dengler, a junior, is a 2013 graduate of Siuslaw High school. She played at Southwestern Oregon Community College before transferring to Humboldt State (Arcata, California).
