Ex-Viking awaits fate in 2017 MLB Draft

Siuslaw graduate Jake Thompson led the nation in wins during the 2017 season, posting a 14-0 record at Oregon State.

Right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson was the 1,008th pick overall in 2013 when he was drafted after his senior year at Siuslaw High School.

The Chicago Cubs grabbed him in the 34th round, but the Florence native took his game to Corvallis, where he has garnered first-team All-American honors.

As Thompson and his teammates head to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series, the siren call of pro ball will be heard this week during Major League Baseball's 2017 draft.

The red-shirt junior may hear his name called Monday when the first 75 players are taken in rounds 1 and 2.

Thompson, 22, listed at 6 foot 2 and 205 pounds, is ranked No. 71 on the MLB.com 2017 Prospect Watch.

The MLB.com scouting report on Thompson:

  • Thompson has always had the kind of arm strength teams find intriguing. The Cubs even drafted him out of high school, albeit in the 34th round. But he hadn't always been able to translate that to consistent success, with up-and-down years at Oregon State that included inconsistent use and a redshirt season. But the right-hander was putting it all together at just the right time this spring.
  • Thompson has been outstanding as the Sunday starter for the college team that has been considered the top program in the nation for much of the year. With a much more simplified delivery than he had in the past, he's consistently living in the 94-96 mph range with his fastball. He complements it well with a slider that flashes above average and a solid changeup.
  • While Thompson's walk rate has gone down considerably, there is still some concern about his command. That, along with a lack of track record, have some debating the starter-vs.-reliever profile. There are enough scouts who now think he can start that seeing him go in the early rounds is very likely.

Scouts grade his fastball a 60, his slider a 55, his changeup a 50, his control 45 and overall 45.

Players are graded on a 20-80 scale for future tools, with 20-30 well below average, 40 below average, 50 average, 60 above average and 70-80 well above average.

The Minnesota Twins are expected to make the first overall pick a little after 4 p.m. Monday.

The MLB Network will broadcast the first 36 picks, while MLB.com will stream all 75 picks over two rounds on Day 1.

MLB.com will provide pick-by-pick coverage on Day 2 of rounds 3-10, starting at 10 a.m., and on Day 3 of rounds 11-40, beginning at 9 a.m.
