The deadline is fast approaching for settling the issues of classification and districting for the Oregon School Activities Association for the 2018-22 four-year time block.

The Siuslaw Vikings currently appear destined for a drop in classification, from 4A to 3A, and a major shift in leagues.

The latest drafts have the Vikings leaving the 6-school 4A Far West League for either a 4-school or 6-school 3A Umpqua River Conference.

The four-school model has Siuslaw with Coquille, Rogue River and South Umpqua.

The six-school model has Siuslaw with those schools plus Douglas and Sutherlin.

The shift also will change state championship destinations for the Vikings.

Cross country would see the most immediate change, from competing in 4A to competing in a combined 3A/2A/1A.

The OSAA championships committee currently is considering a new 3A-only championship for cross country, which would be introduced in fall 2018.

There also is the question of how the leagues deal with sports and activities offered.

For instance, Siuslaw is the only 4A school not to offer boys or girls soccer.

For soccer, Coquille combines with Myrtle Point, South Umpqua combines with Riddle and Sutherlin combines with Oakland. Douglas is in the Far West League and Rogue River in a special district.

Coquille, Rogue River and Sutherlin offer both boys and girls golf.

The classification and districting committee is expected to make a recommendation by Oct. 16.

There are two more open meetings scheduled — Monday, Aug. 28, and Monday Sept. 25 — at the OSAA office in McMinnville.

The committee last met Tuesday, June 22, but has yet to release minutes from that meeting, which included public testimony.
