OSAA puts Vikings in league with La Pine

The Oregon School Activities Association's classification and districting committee released its latest model Thursday (June 29), and there is some good news and some bad news for the Siuslaw Vikings.

Good: No 3-hour-plus trip to Rogue River for Vikings teams.

Bad: A 3-hour-plus trip to La Pine.

The 18th draft in the months-long process places Siuslaw in the 8-school Mountain Valley Conference, which includes (enrollment in parentheses):

  • Creswell Bulldogs (342)
  • Elmira Falcons (345)
  • Harrisburg Eagles (272)
  • La Pine Hawks (324)
  • Pleasant Hill Billies (294)
  • Santiam Christian Eagles (230)
  • Scio Loggers (257)
  • Siuslaw Vikings (347)

This latest 6-class model puts Siuslaw in 3A with 40 other schools with enrollments of 206 to 365. (Brookings-Harbor, with an enrollment of 449, would be granted a geographic exemption.)

The Far West League no longer would exist.

Marshfield and North Bend would be in a 5-school 4A Sky-Em League with Cottage Grove, Junction City and Marist Catholic.

Brookings-Harbor, Douglas and South Umpqua would be in the 8-school 3A Umpqua River Conference with Cascade Christian (Medford), Coquille, Rogue River, St. Mary's (Medford) and Sutherlin.

The latest draft has 56 schools in 6A, 28 in 5A, 32 in 4A, 41 in 3A, 46 in 2A and 86 in 1A.

The committee has just two more meeting dates, 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, and 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at the OSAA Office in Wilsonville.

The committee will make its final recommendations to the OSAA Executive Board at an Oct. 16 special classification and districting meeting.
