Vikings hire Tom Shinn to be head coach


New Vikings baseball coach Tom Shinn.

Tom Shinn has been hired to teach social studies and coach baseball at Siuslaw High School, Vikings athletic director Chris Johnson announced Thursday.

Shinn, who taught at Dallas High School last school year, replaces Tony Castro as head coach of the Vikings.

"I am excited about this opportunity to return to baseball and ready to work hard to make an impact with Siuslaw HS baseball," Shinn wrote in an email to Johnson.

Shinn is a 1988 graduate of Roseburg High School. He received a bachelor's degree in social science from Western Oregon.

Shinn coached Willamina to a state runner-up finish in 2A/1A baseball in 1999.

He also has coached high school football, softball and track and field.
