OHA, gun club hold free youth day Saturday

When it comes to firearms, ammunition and food, it's hard to beat free.

But that's what the Siuslaw chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association is offering for area youth from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Siuslaw Rod & Gun Club, 87227 Munsel Lake Road in Florence.

"We'd like them to be at least 8 or 9 years old, and they must be accompanied by parents," chapter president Dan Straight said. "The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife provides the firearms and ammunition."

Participants will have the opportunity to shoot bows and arrows, 22s and shotguns, Straight said.

Free subway sandwiches and water will be provided for the young hunters and their parents.

"We'd like them to register by August 1 (Tuesday), so we can get an idea of how many are coming," Straight said.

ODFW has a special trailer with firearms and ammunition it loans out for youth day. The Siuslaw Rod & Gun Club is providing use of its facilities, while the Siuslaw chapter of the OHA provides volunteers and pays for the food.
