Thompson tosses 2 shutout innings in start

Siuslaw graduate Jake Thompson tossed two shutout innings Saturday for the Lowell Spinners of the Class A short-season New York-Penn League.

Thompson has now started four games for the Spinners, pitching 1, 1, 2 and 2 innings for a total of 6 innings. He has given up 5 hits, 3 walks, 2 runs, 2 earned runs and struck out 6 while posting a 3.00 earned run average.

"The Spinners have limited how much he throws," his father, Jon, said in an email. "He had that rusty first start where he gave up a couple of blooper hits that turned into runs. He's been solid since."

Thompson was taken in the fourth round by the Boston Red Sox in the recent Major League Baseball draft.

"They're concerned he pitched a lot of innings during the college season," Jon Thompson said.

Jake Thompson was a first-team All-American for Oregon State, posting a 14-1 record with 119 strikeouts in 128 2-3 innings.
