Siuslaw has cancelled its junior varsity football opener Thursday at Elmira, Vikings athletic director Chris Johnson announced Wednesay.

"I hope it's a one-time thing," Johnson said, when asked if the season is in jeopardy. "Tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 31) we don't have enough kids to field two teams in two days."

Oregon School Activities Association rules allow for players in Class 4A and below to play in six quarters a week as long as there is a minimum of 60 hours between contests.

The Vikings did not field a junior varsity football team in 2016 because of the need to use players at the varsity level.

The OSAA defines a week as running from Tuesday through the following Monday.

A quarter is strictly defined.

"Participation in any play in a quarter shall constitute participation in that quarter, no exceptions," the rule reads.

The balance of junior varsity games this season are scheduled for Mondays, which should allow for more flexibility for teams with smaller rosters, such as Siuslaw.

The Vikings varsity will host Elmira at 7 p.m. Friday at Hans Petersen Field.

Next scheduled junior varsity game for the Vikings is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Pleasant Hill.

Siuslaw suited a total of 33 varsity and junior varsity players for last Friday's annual Blue-Gold Game.
