Elmira clubs Vikings in season opener, 50-0


Elmira running back Brady Nagel, a 5-11, 155-pound junior, rushed 12 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns Friday.

Junior running back Brady Nagel rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns Friday to lead the visiting Elmira Falcons to a 50-0 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings in a nonleague football game at Hans Petersen Field.

Nagel ran 60 yards for a touchdown on Elmira's first play from scrimmage midway through the first quarter for the first points of the game, and the only points the Falcons would need to win.

Nagel also scored on a 2-yard run late in the first half and a 73-yard run early in the fourth quarter. He did all that damage on 12 carries.

Teammate Kain Caudell, a senior, rushed 13 times for 107 yards and a pair of second-quarter scores, while sophomore Alex Head had 4 rushes for 38 yards and a score.

For the night, the Falcons rushed 44 times for 392 yards and six touchdowns.

Elmira also scored on a 22-yard interception return by junior lineman Cedars Marshall.

Senior quarterback Jared Brandt led the Vikings with 47 yards rushing on 11 carries, while hitting 11 of 19 passes for 122 yards.

Senior Trent Reavis had six catches for 68 yards.

Siuslaw hosts Pleasant Hill at 7 p.m. next Friday at Hans Petersen Field.

The Billies dropped their season opener to Dayton on Friday night, 41-13.

In other games involving Far West League schools, North Bend nudged Astoria, 21-20; Mazama routed South Umpqua, 46-20; Valley Catholic edged Douglas, 29-22. and Marshfield mauled Cascade, 48-19.

Brookings-Harbor plays North Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crescent Valley in a game that was moved because of smoke from forest fires in the Brookings area.

The Vikings turned the ball over twice, once on an interception and once on a fumble. The interception was returns for a TD and the fumble on the kickoff return set up a 33-yard scoring drive for the Falcons. ...

Elmira punted twice for a total of 102 yards, or 51 yards a punt. The Falcons did not punt once last season in a 35-14 win over the Vikings. ...
