Middle blockers power Vikings to sweep

Sophomore middle blocker-outside hitter Mia Collins had team highs of 6 kills and 4 digs Tuesday at Elmira.

Sophomore Mia Collins had 6 kills and 4 digs and junior Makenzie York had 5 kills and 3 block solos Tuesday as the two Siuslaw middle blockers led the Vikings to a sweep of the Elmira Falcons in a nonleague girls volleyball match in Elmira.

The Vikings won 25-21, 25-14, 25-14. Siuslaw (2-1) is at Pleasant Hill (3-1) on Thursday (Sept. 7). First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Siuslaw is scheduled to play in the Canby Tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings open Far West League play Tuesday, Sept. 12, hosting Marshfield at 6:30 p.m.

Siuslaw is the defending league champion.

COACH JON HORNUNG:

"The air wasn't too bad, it was terrible outside but everything was fine in the gym.

"We had a pretty mediocre match yesterday. We came out strong and then played really flat. The competition wasn't very strong, so we just went through the motions. We need to learn to push ourselves to play harder even if the competition is weak. We made a lot of little mistakes on things like setting and hitting that didn't hurt us in this match, but will come back to bite us against stronger teams.

"We were aggressive at the net, which I was really happy to see. Mak and Mia were unstoppable up front, and Mia, Maci (Wells) and Jordan (Long) did a good job of anchoring the back line. We continued to mix the line up, testing out Emma (Collins) at right side and Kendall (Robinson) at left side, and we'll continue to adjust things tomorrow at Pleasant Hill and on Saturday in Canby.

"The goal for the rest of the preseason is to give a couple girls a shot at positions that are still being figured out to see who will step up."

NOTES

Makenzie York was Coast Radio's first athlete of the week for the new school year. The 6-foot junior had 30 kills in last week's split with Junction City and Philomath. Mia Collins was honorable mention.
