The Siuslaw Vikings girls volleyball team played its shortest match of the season in the middle of its longest trip, sweeping past the Brookings-Harbor Bruins in Brookings on Thursday, 25-18, 25-8, 25-8.
The win leveled the Vikings' Far West League record at 1-1 and upped their overall record to 3-4.
Siuslaw plays Douglas at Winston on Tuesday.
Junior middle blocker Makenzie York had 10 kills, junior outside hitter Jordan Long had 5 aces and senior libero Maci Wells had 7 digs to lead the Vikings.
"It was one of the most complete matches we've played up to this point this season," Siuslaw coach Jon Hornung said. "We changed the lineup, adding Kendal Robinson and having her and Aylenne (Vasquez) share the setting duties.
"They both did an swesome job of controlling the offense and showed a lot of maturity on the court regardless of what was happening."
The Vikings' defense also showed improvement of a league-opening loss to Marshfield on Tuesday.
"The defense was really solid, and Maci (Wells) looked a lot like the Maci I remember from last year," Hornung said. "She doesn't let anything hit the ground, and she's so much fun to watch.
"Our front row was solid as usual with Mak (York) and Mia (Collins) anchoring the middle and Alyssa (Richards) and Jordan (Long) swinging strong on the outside.
"Emma (Collins) had probably her best match of the year, and was pretty much unstoppable at the right side."
Following the Douglas match, the Vikings return home to host North Bend at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
