Newport runs away from Siuslaw, 49-0

Addison Galen (42) and the Cubs running game were a handful for Trent Reavis (23) and the Vikings on Friday night in Newport.

The Newport Cubs took out more than two years of football frustration Friday night, pinning a 49-0 loss on the visiting Siuslaw Vikings at Gene Morrow Field.

The Vikings dropped to 0-3, all nonleague. Siuslaw hosts Douglas at 7 p.m. Friday at Hans Petersen Field in a Far West League opener.

Newport (1-2) didn't look like a team that had one win in its past 20, dating back to the last four games of the 2014 season.

On offense, the Cubs struck for seven touchdowns, three by junior running back Tanner Stottlemyre, who rushed  9 times for a game-high 99 yards and scores of 19, 55 and 5 yards.

Newport rushed 37 times for 261 yards.

Cubs senior quarterback Dylan Crowell completed 6 of 12 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, the Cubs limited the Vikings to four first downs and had four takeaways, two on interceptions and two on fumbles.

In other games involving Far West League teams, Douglas (2-1) beat Hidden Valley, 32-8; North Bend (3-0) beat Cascade, 24-8; Marshfield (3-0) beat Junction City, 38-6, and Brookings-Harbor (0-3) lost to The Dalles, 22-0.

South Umpqua (1-1) hosts Phoenix on Saturday (Sept. 16).

In other league openers this coming Friday, South Umpqua is at Marshfield and Brookings-Harbor at North Bend.
