Griffes, Vikings boys and girls claim titles

Siuslaw senior Isaac Griffes won the individual boys title and the Vikings boys and girls swept team titles Thursday in the Far West League cross country championships at Tugman State Park.

Siuslaw won the boys title with 28 points to 49 by Marshfield and the girls title with 38 points to 55 by South Umpqua. The top two team finishers advance to state, Saturday, Nov. 4, at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Griffes finished the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 57.12 seconds, well ahead of South Umpqua senior Nakai Sinohui (personal record 17:11.63) and Marshfield sophomore Aaron Prince (PR 17:12.18).

Vikings finished 4-5-6 and 12, sophomore Brendon Jensen in 17:13.40, sophomore Kiger Johnson in a PR 17:22.33, senior Jordan Northrop in a PR 17:25.72 and sophomore Jared Northrop in 18:11.85.

Siuslaw sophomore Hannah Rannow was second overall in the girls race in 20:08.33. Marshfield junior Jazmin Chavez won in 19:48.81.

Vikings also finished 6-7-9 and 14, freshman Brea Blankenship in 20:23.96, sophomore Anne Wartnik in a PR 20:30.85, sophomore Chloe Madden in 20:59.69 and freshman Gracie Freudenthal in 21:43.75.

It was the final Far West League District cross country championship, with Siuslaw heading to the Sky-Em League next school year and the league being dissolved.
