Vikings poised to collect state hardware

Siuslaw Vikings cross country coach Chris Johnson has a plan for Saturday's state championships in Eugene, and that means at least one thing:

The school's amazing trophy cases likely will get more crowded.

"If we go to the state meet and execute our game plan, we can come away with trophies," Johnson said Tuesday.

The Vikings warmed up for the Oregon Schools Activities Association Class 4A championships by sweeping Far West League titles last Thursday at Tugman State Park.

Siuslaw senior Isaac Griffes won the individual title to lead the Vikings boys to victory, while sophomore Hannah Rannow was second overall to pace the girls.

"I'm really proud of how far both of these teams have come this year," Johnson said. "As far as district goes, any time you win a championship you should be happy.

"I think we will be better on Saturday than we were last week. It is nice to have one championship race under our belts."

Hypothetical finishes from Athletic.net have the Vikings finishing third in both races.

"The boys' field is deep. I think there are six teams that can win," Johnson said.

"Tillamook is a huge favorite on the girls' side and they will be tough to beat. I think we are comparable to the rest of the field."

As usual, the Johnson-coached teams are peaking at the right time.

"I think the girls learned some lessons about race strategy," Johnson said. "And I think the boys will be healthier on Saturday."
