Reynolds, Truax named varsity, JV coaches

Greg Reynolds has been named head coach of the Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball team.

Greg Reynolds and Sara Truax are the new varsity and junior varsity girls basketball coaches for the Siuslaw Vikings, athletic director Chris Johnson announced Tuesday.

"We told them both we would support them the best we can," Johnson said, noting both hires will carry an interim tag. "We have high hopes. (But) when the season is over, we will sit down and reevaluate."

Reynolds has assisted with the Vikings girls basketball program in recent years. His daughter, Madison, a junior, is one of the top players on the team.

Reynolds is married to Florence city manager Erin Noakes Reynolds.

"We are fortunate in that Greg has been around the program and the girls," Johnson said. "This allows the most stability and consistency for the program."

Truax is a first-year physical education teacher with a degree in exercise science from Oregon State.

"I'm super-stoked to coach these girls," Truax said. "I'm very excited. We have a great group of girls on JV."

Truax has been a head instructor at camps and has coached disabled students. This is her first high school experience.

"It's a little trepidatious for both of those two," Johnson said. "For Greg, one day you're JV coach, the next day you're trying to run the whole program.

"There are a lot of demands on new coaches. Sara is new to the community. Both are cautiously optimistic."

The Lady Vikings, who play their first six games on the road, lost at Creswell on Wednesday, 42-30. Game details were not available.

Siuslaw's home opener is Tuesday, Dec. 12, against Cottage Grove.
