Vikings appear headed to a special district

The Siuslaw Vikings are headed to the Class 4A Sky-Em League next school year, but the school's football team may not be going along.

The Oregon School Activities Association's ad hoc football committee has a set of proposals that hopefully would bring more competitive balance to the sport.

Siuslaw football, playing down a classification, would be among 30 schools in three Class 3A special districts.

The Vikings would be in a 12-school district that includes Harrisburg, Brookings-Harbor, Cascade Christian, Douglas, Hidden Valley, La Pine, Pleasant Hill, Santiam Christian, South Umpqua, St. Mary's (Medford) and Sutherlin.

Siuslaw, Brookings-Harbor, Douglas and South Umpqua currently compete in the 4A Far West League, along with Marshfield and North Bend.

The proposal places Marshfield in a seven-school 4A special district with Cottage Grove, Henley, Klamath Falls, Mazama, North Valley and Phoenix.

North Bend would be in an eight-school 5A special district with Ashland, Churchill, Crater, Eagle Point, South Eugene, Thurston and Willamette.

Siuslaw will be allowed to move down a classification because it is one of 11 Group A schools statewide with a two-year Colley (same classification) winning percentage of 22 percent or lower.

Siuslaw is 3-11 — 21.4 percent — against schools in its own classification over the past two seasons, 1-6 in 2017 and 2-5 in 2016. The Vikings also lost twice to 3A Pleasant Hill in that two-year period.

The next meeting of the ad hoc committee is 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the OSAA office in Wilsonville. The committee will take public testimony followed by a closed work session.

An update of the committee's most-recent proposal is online at http://www.osaa.org/docs/committees/football/20171218update.pdf.

The OSAA is expected to adopt a new reclassification and districting alignment for all sports by mid-February, with implementation set for this coming fall.

Most Vikings sports teams will compete in a new six-school Sky-Em League that includes Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Marshfield and Marist.
