Cottage Grove juniors Matty Ladd and Reiily Kelty combined for 30 points Friday to lead the No. 10-ranked Lions to a 39-34 victory over the Siuslaw Vikings in a Sky-Em League girls basketball opener at Glenn Butler Court.

The Lady Vikings, 4-11, will play at Marist,  Marshfield and Elmira their next three games.

Cottage Grove improved to 9-6 overall. Ladd finished with 18 points and Kelty 12.

Siuslaw junior Mia Collins had a team-high 15 points in the game. Sophomore Brea Blankenship had 9 points, senior Alyssa Richards and sophomore Lindsey Long 4 each and sophomore Gracie Freudenthal 2.

With a minute to play, the Lady Vikings had the ball and trailed by just 2 points, 36-34. The Lions closed it out on a basket by Ladd and a free throw by Mikaela Blomquist.

Down 23-22 entering the fourth quarter, Siuslaw went ahead 24-23 on a basket by Blankenship and 26-25 on a basket by Collins. Cottage Grove went on a 9-2 roll to take control, 34-28.

The Lady Vikings trailed by 5 points after the first quarter, 10-5, and by 4 points at halftime, 16-12.

In other Sky-Em League openers, Marshfield mauled visiting Junction City, 59-38, and Marist romped 51-34 at Elmira.
