Vikings to kick off season Sept. 6 at Elmira

The Siuslaw Vikings football team will host four home games and a jamboree in the 2019 season, according to its schedule posted on the Oregon School Activities Association website.

The Vikings open their season Sept. 6 at Elmira, followed by a game Sept. 13 at Philomath.

Five of the remaining six games are at Hans Petersen Field, including the final nonleague game Sept. 20 against Newport.

Two of the five OSAA 3A Special District 2 North games are scheduled on the road, Santiam Christian at Adair Village Oct. 11 and at Sutherlin Nov. 1.

The remaining schedule has the Vikings playing at home Oct. 4 vs. Harrisburg, Oct. 18 vs. Pleasant Hill and Oct. 25 vs. La Pine.

Siuslaw also will host a jamboree with Pleasant Hill and a team or teams to be announced on Aug. 30.

First practice is Monday, Aug. 12.

Chad Smith, who doubles as the school's girls basketball coach, will return for his second season.

Assistant coaches are Dennis Davidson, Gerald Fleming, Jeff Gray, Tom Shinn and Bob Teter.

NOTES

The Vikings finished last season with 32 players on the roster, including 13 freshmen, 8 sophomores, 6 juniors and 5 seniors. ...

Turnout for football continues its decline. Participation numbers the four seasons prior to 2018 were 35 in 2017, 40 in 2016, 44 in 2016 and 57 in 2015. ...
