Lady Vikings take next step to state tourney

This is a big week for the Siuslaw Vikings four-person girls wrestling team.

Vikings freshmen Bailey Overton and Hayden Muller and juniors Adriana Edwards and Kinga Bugajska will be competing for berths in the first Oregon School Activities Association girls state wrestling tournament.

The top two placers at a qualifying meet Friday and Saturday at Thurston High School in Springfield will advance.

The OSAA state championships are Feb. 22-23 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Schools at all levels have been segmented into North and South divisions. Siuslaw is in the South.

Four athletes in each of the 10 weight classes will automatically qualify.

Thursday is senior night for Siuslaw, with a dual scheduled against South Umpqua at 6 p.m. at the Siuslaw High School gym.

The Vikings boys will compete Saturday at Philomath against Oregon West Conference schools.

Siuslaw is coming off a successful tournament this past weekend at Cottage Grove.

Saturday was especially gratifying to Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik.

"The highlight of the day took place on the girls' side," Wartnik said. "All four of our girls placed, and the team took second out of the 26-plus teams in attendance.

"We were edged out for first by Cottage Grove, but the Cottage Grove team is twice the size of ours."

Overton and Muller finished first in their weight classes, Edwards second and Bugajska third.

"On the boys side, we had a phenomenal day Saturday!" Wartnik said. "Our four survivors (from Friday) each wrestled extremely well. We ended up placing 14th out of the 26 teams, but we entered only six wrestlers in the competition."

Matthew Horrillo had a third-place finish, Brady Libby and Ryan Jennings had fourth places and Riley Jennings a fifth place.

"Resilence and guttiness marked their performance," Wartnik said.

Regional championships, with state berths on the line, are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at Junction City.
